The Troubling Case of Algernon Toadly
By Peter Walton

Part Two

A letter from Dr Fabian Mortley to Dr Winston Cooper October 11th 1887

My Dear Winston,

It appears I must begin this missive with my most humble apology for I have not frequented our club of late, as I have been much pre-occupied. When last we spoke, I confess my unbridled hubris was offended that you found my scientific conjecture risible. I can only emphasise my shame and distress at my reaction. I trust you can forgive my petty idiosyncrasies and we may return to our form halcyon days of faithful companionship. I would be delighted should you be able to join me for dinner this Wednesday at the usual hour.

My time since last I saw you has been most fruitful and I look forward to demonstrating to your satisfaction the truth of my hypothesis.

I remain your dear friend, Fabian Mortley.
